Following the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, protests surged in cities around the nation. Complex emotions and experiences led to diverse manifestations of anger, mourning, solidarity, and hope. Many white people of faith felt uncertain about where to stand and, months later, still find themselves unsure of what to do next. Guided by Scripture and the insights of prophets, join us as we consider where white Catholics fit within Christ’s call to be a people of liberation and why it is in our personal interest to find our place there.
Matt Harper is a former middle school teacher in the Los Angeles Catholic school system. He currently lives and works as a community member of the Los Angeles Catholic Worker, helping run a Skid Row soup kitchen, a house of hospitality, and resistance against systems of harm. Matt is also an organizer with White People 4 Black Lives, which works to build white anti-racist capacity to end white support for state violence in Los Angeles.
